Training Director at Portland Psychotherapy 

The Training Director’s primary responsibility is to oversee the clinical training of practicum students and postdoctoral fellows at Portland Psychotherapy Clinic, Research, & Training Center. They also guide the internal didactics for all new staff and provide supervision for pre-license staff. This position is anticipated to be between 25-35% effort in the training director role with the remainder providing clinical services. Depending upon interest and experience, the role may also be able to have additional supervisory and administrative duties if there is the right match.  

The Training Director oversees Portland Psychotherapy’s postdoctoral fellowship program and practicum training program. This is an opportunity to support a leading research and training clinic in providing the best possible evidence-based care and supervise future professionals while also maintaining an active clinical practice that has a high level of flexibility and autonomy. The successful applicant must be able to demonstrate a strong commitment to the use of evidence-based practices in psychotherapy, particularly newer third wave approaches such as ACT, RODBT, CFT, or DBT, as well as a commitment to DEI and antiracist practices. 

Our training clinic typically has around 5 pre-license trainees (psychology postdocs and practicum students) at any given time and serves a diverse range of clients receiving Medicaid (Oregon Health Plan) services. Training has always been an important part of our organization (it’s in our name!) and our training program has been operating since we took on our first postdoc in 2009. We continue to grow and evolve and are looking for a psychologist who is passionate about training and supervision to join our team and lead the future development of our training program.  

This position offers an unparalleled opportunity to work with world experts in Acceptance and Commitment therapy, Exposure therapy, and psychedelic-assisted therapy who have written 3 popular books on these topics and together have published over 100 peer-reviewed articles. We support an active research program including running a clinical trial of MDMA-assisted therapy for social anxiety disorder. This position offers a great opportunity for anyone who wants to continue to develop their skills in practicing and teaching these methods and to practice alongside active researchers in these areas.  

Training Director Responsibilities:  

Meet regularly with and provide feedback to trainees regarding productivity, required documentation, clinical case consultation, professional mentorship, and general motivation and encouragement. 

Be the primary source of contact for trainees and be responsible for overseeing trainees’ overall training experience. 

Update and maintain training program, including trainee handbook and trainee didactics program. 

Listen to trainee feedback and present any relevant feedback to leadership team. 

Orient new clinical supervisors and support supervisors on an ongoing basis . 

Recruit, interview, and assist in selecting trainees. 

Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within the training program, ensuring that training and recruitment practices are inclusive and equitable, and that trainees are prepared to work effectively with diverse populations. 

Coordinate with entities related to trainees, such as other training programs and state board of psychology. 

Coordinate didactics program for all staff. 

Supervise at least 1-2 trainees as an individual clinical supervisor or lead group supervision. 

Minimum qualifications:  

Doctoral degree and eligible for licensure as a psychologist in Oregon.  

Minimum one year as clinical supervisor 

Demonstrated commitment to evidence-based practices  

Detail oriented  

Plans, organizes, and schedules in an efficient and productive manner  

Excellent leadership and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with a multidisciplinary team and external partners 

Ability to design and implement procedures that increase efficiency and consistency of training program over years 

Excellent communication, interpersonal abilities, and boundaries, including being supportive of and also able to willing to corrective feedback to trainees. 

Strong commitment to supporting a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace environment.  

Preferred qualifications 

Demonstrated experience in implementing DEI initiatives within training programs or clinical settings 

Demonstrated experience in conducting and coordinating continuing education events

Salary Range – Expected salary range starts at $115,000 per year and up depending upon experience and qualifications. Pay range depends partially on clients seen, so you can make significantly more than that if you choose to see more clients.
