Monica Metzler, LMFT (she/her)

“Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.” – Rumi

I am providing both telehealth and in-person services.

Living with depression, anxiety, and/or relationship challenges can be costly, often resulting in significant distress and disconnection. When we don’t feel connected to ourselves, our purpose, or others, our emotional and mental well-being suffers. When you’re in pain, it may feel difficult to gain perspective, reach out to others, or find a way out of feeling stuck. Evidence suggests that having a non-judgmental supportive space where you can confront painful feelings and experiences, and be met with compassion and curiosity, helps build strength and connection. As a strength-based therapist, I believe that everyone has the potential to live rich and meaningful lives, even in the face of pain or trauma you may be experiencing. I view you as someone who has unique gifts to offer the world and the tools within to transform, heal, and empower yourself.

As a therapist, I will center your needs, desires, and goals. I will assist you in understanding your struggles and strengths while building skills that improve your relationship with yourself and others. As a trained family and couples’ therapist, I work with youth ages 9 and up, adults, couples, and families of all configurations. I believe that each person’s lived experience including their family history, and their social and cultural environment, greatly impacts their sense of self, safety, and belonging in the world. I strive to promote your autonomy while also acknowledging the dynamic ways that systems and culture shape us- particularly for those who face systemic oppression.

My therapeutic approach is based in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Gottman & Gottman Methods (for couples), which focuses on naming and making sense of your thoughts and feelings, identifying values, and building tangible skills to disrupt behaviors that no longer serve you. As a Queer, biracial person living with a chronic illness, I have particular interest in working with clients who identify as BIPOC, LGBTQI+, Disabled, Poly/NM, as well as anyone who is struggling with relationships, grief, trauma, and illness. Drawing on my background as an artist and musician, I may supplementally use creative interventions to help you process and express emotions and experiences in a non-verbal way. I have found this is particularly helpful for children, teens, neurodivergent folks, and those who often do not feel they fit in with mainstream culture. Healing is a unique journey, and my role as therapist is to support your process, by providing a trusting relationship space where you can confront pain and suffering and learn new tools and skills, to move beyond coping to thriving.
