I strive to provide warm, compassionate and non-judgmental care, and to practice well-informed medication management with consideration for both the benefits and the very real limits of medications, and with a focus on the person beyond a diagnosis.
I am providing both in-person and telehealth services.
As a psychiatrist, I offer comprehensive diagnostic and medication evaluations, medication management, and psychiatric consultation. I’m licensed in Oregon and Washington and offer both in-person and online visits, though I find it’s often helpful for our first meeting to be in person if possible. I am happy to assist you in initiating medication for the first time, in optimizing your current medications, in streamlining an overly complicated medication regimen, smoothly tapering off medication that’s no longer effective or needed, or in thinking out-of-the-box if medication results have been disappointing in the past. I believe in a “less is more” approach to medication and encourage non-pharmacologic interventions when appropriate. It’s completely normal to have questions or mixed feelings about medication — I’m here to help you explore your options at your own pace.
I take the time to understand where you’ve been, what you’re facing, and what you want for your life. If you have a therapist at Portland Psychotherapy or elsewhere, I will partner with them to develop a medication treatment plan that supports your therapeutic progress. My own therapeutic approach, which is incorporated into your medication management visit, is rooted in evidence-based practices like CBT, DBT, ACT, and Motivational Interviewing.
About me: I’m from the Midwest, growing up in Wisconsin and receiving my undergraduate degree in biology and psychology from Luther College in Iowa. After tiring of cold winters, I made my way to California, where I received an M.D. and a Ph.D. (in Neuroscience) from UCLA. After nearly a decade of sun (and smog), I saw the appeal of green trees, misty weather, and hot coffee and moved up the coast for my specialty training in psychiatry at the University of Washington where I also completed a fellowship in Addiction Psychiatry. I worked for several years in a clinic that specialized in the treatment of anxiety disorders and emotion dysregulation before moving to Portland. In my free time I enjoy my family and pets, reading, listening to podcasts, dragon boating, and learning new skills (most recently juggling).
