Most of us spend a lot of our time on autopilot. Sometimes we get stuck in the future – planning, stressing, or worrying. Sometimes we get stuck in the past –ruminating, criticizing ourselves, beating ourselves up. When we are not present in our lives, we miss out on so much that is important to us. I use mindfulness methods to help my clients get some distance from their thoughts and become more present to their lives. Once we are present in our own lives, then change becomes easier.
But what good is being present if you aren’t doing the things that are important to you? I strive to help clients identify what is most important to them in life and engage in those things fully. At times we can feel “stuck” or “lost” in life, whether that takes the form of depression, anxiety, relationship issues, or something else. It can be like we’re lost in the woods without a compass. I help clients who feel lost find their compass. This “compass” is often their values, or what they find most important in life. Once we know the direction we want to take in our lives, we can more easily find our path.
Finally, it is important that we are kind to ourselves. Life is an unpredictable series of events and things often don’t go the way we would like them to. When they don’t, our mind can sometimes say nasty or mean things about ourselves or others. When my clients have thoughts like this, I work to help them develop a sense of compassion both for themselves and those around them. When we approach ourselves with kindness, even in the face of struggles or mishaps, we often find that life is more fulfilling, enriching, and meaningful.
I am a doctoral student in clinical psychology working under the supervision of Dr. Angela Izmirian, a licensed psychologist at Portland Psychotherapy. As part of Portland Psychotherapy’s efforts to offer mental health services to people who cannot otherwise afford care, I offer reduced fee services at $20 per session.
